Library Summer Reading Programs

Share your plans and ideas for library summer reading programs.

It's that time again. What are plans for your 2009 summer reading programs?

I'm currently working on the 2009 version of New York's statewide web site. Not ready yet, but I'll post it here when it is. Just putting up content for planners at this point. Will get games and activities up there later in the spring.

Our theme this summer is "Be Creative!" Thoughts so far are art lessons by a local artist and gallery owner, possibly a sibling band for the music end. Thinking of creating musical instruments--maybe a talent show. This is my first year here and I'm wondering how to include reading in this program. We will meet once a week--three classes/age groups for 6 weeks in the summer.

Any suggestions from you veterans?

Thanks! Mindy

That's the theme here too. I don't have any idea what I'll be doing just yet, give me another month!

We're such a small town library that I only do the one story-hour per week, and the age range is 4-4th grade. I always start the story-hour with a book that either goes along with the craft/activity of the week or is by the illustrator who creates the theme (yipeee, David Catrow this year!!!)

I hope some more veterans have more ideas to share!

Hi,
For the month of July, the local art museum is coming once a week. They will read a Caldecott Award winning book and incorporate an art project around the art/topic of the book. We are having a performer who will use music and fun noises to teach about sound, we will showcase books about sound and music. We are also having a cartoonist who will teach the kids about drawing cartoons while telling stories. We will have both drawing books and graphic novels on display.
