Hi everybody,I'm late joining this site (apologies), but wanted to introduce our library.
I'm writing from the South Lafourche Branch of the Lafourche Parish Public Library. We're in a small town called Cut Off in southern Lafourche Parish. Our parish has about 97,000 residents, approximately, and we serve as one of the three "main" library branches for our system. We have six other smaller branches as well.
For employment, many of our residents dependent on the oil and gas industries in the nearby Gulf of Mexico, the companies that provide service to those industries, and to commercial fishing and agriculture.
We're predominantly Cajun (there's loads of great food here), but like probably any other place, there are people of many other ethnicities that call Lafourche home as well.
Our Summer Reading Program is in full-swing and is going very well.
With our Dollar General Summer Teen Intern Grant, we were able to offer paid internships to two local students, and our library system was very generous in matching our grant amount so that we could offer two additional paid internships -- so we are joined this summer by four interns. We have three 17 year olds and one 16 year old.
We very much appreciate our teen interns.
Currently, they are assisting staff members in our children's arts and crafts programs and in story hours.
They are doing a fantastic job; they relate well to the children who attend our programs, and their efforts are doing much to make the summer a little less hectic for staff members.
They seem to be enjoying themselves as well.
Every time I see them, they're smiling, which is great.
We also very much appreciate YALSA and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for awarding us this wonderful grant.
We hope your summer is going well.
